One of Cannery Row's best assets is the Coastal Recreation Trail, which weaves through Cannery Row and beyond, providing a first-class path for all kinds of free recreational activities along the coast. It's also an easy way to travel from one end of Cannery Row to the other.
Miles of Smiles
The trail runs over the old Southern Pacific railroad lines that serviced Cannery Row when the sardine canneries were in full swing. Today, a paved path leads through Monterey Bay’s diverse terrains, scenic views, and a variety of activities. The rec trail is ideal for walking, biking, skating, running, or renting surreys. Cannery Row's specialty shops, great restaurants, look-out points, and beaches are never more than a block away.
This well-maintained coastal trail is great for spotting many kinds of wildlife that thrive in the environment of Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay. Chances are you will pass by otters floating on their backs, sea lions barking on the rocks, seabirds, whales in the distance, and a multitude of other marine animals and native plants.
Along the Bay and Back Again
For those that want to combine a longer distance ride, run, or walk with their Cannery Row stay, keep going in either direction. The trail stretches an amazing 29 miles from Castroville, California, through Monterey and into Pebble Beach, offering unparalleled views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
When you've had enough exercise, Cannery Row awaits with a cold drink and plenty of places to relax!
