Bubba Gump Shrimp Company
720 Cannery Row
Bubba Gump Shrimp Company & Market
The Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and Market occupies a rebuilt structure first erected in 1916 as the reduction plant for the
Monterey Canning Company. Of the nearly one billion sardines landed each season at Monterey canneries, an estimated two-thirds
were never canned at all but were ground and baked into fishmeal and fertilizer in plants like this one. A dependence on
production of sardine by-products expanded futher during the Great Depression. In fact, Cannery Row had become a fishmeal
and fertilizer industry that canned sardines almost as a sideline.
