Tevis Estate Carriage Houses
425 Cannery Row
Tevis Estate Carriage Houses
The construction of the Tevis Estate on one thousand feet of coastal frontage in 1902 set a tone of magnificent elegance that
has only in the last two decades returned to historic Ocean View Avenue. Two of three original support buildings, or 'carriage
houses,' of the sprawling oceanside estate remain and are located across the street from the elegant Monterey Plaza Hotel.
At one time they were early homes to cannery owners Ben Senderman (Carmel Canning Co.) and Knute Hovden (Hovden Food Products
Corporation). It was also home to modern pioneer Frank Crispo, honorary mayor of Cannery Row, a major leader in the revival
and revitalization of Cannery Row from its post-sardine industrial blight into one of America's favorite visitor destinations.
